LIBERTY

Liberty
Illustration

Project Type:
Academic

Role:

Illustration, Animation
Liberty is an illustration inspired by the styles of Malika Favre and Kenneth Batelman. Both styles utilize a limited color palette, emphasizing the contrast between shadow and highlight. Liberty features the architecture of the Statue of Liberty from a dramatic viewpoint, while subtly reminding the audience of the consequences of climate change.

Sketches:
Different crops of the statue were sketched, but the aerial view allowed for the most dramatic viewpoint. The highlights, mid tones, and shadows of the statue were blocked out to create a high contrast illustration.

Color Variation:
Originally, the illustration was intended to mimic the true colors of the Statue of Liberty. However, since the subject of the illustration is the rising sea level, red hues replaced the green to convey a more ominous tone.
Color variations for illustration: green and red
Application:
The illustration was applied as a hypothetical cover for The New Yorker, and a subtle animation was created to show the water ebbing at the statue’s base.
