Logo design for a small, handmade soy candle business.

Brief:

Hemlock Candles is a handmade candle business based in Wheeling, WV. The owner creates all of the 100% soy candles for sale in small batches, and individually writes each label in a beautiful calligraphy. She wanted to have some consistency across the different scents she creates, but still wanted to keep the authenticity of her small, local business. Additionally, the owner wanted to feature a hemlock branch in the logo, in reference to her business name.

Research:

Several illustration styles were considered, but the detailed, hand drawn style was ideal. We decided that the best way to preserve the charm of local handmade goods was to create a logo to use across packaging, social media, and business cards, but that the labels of the candles could still feature the handwriting of the owner.

Logo Elements:

The hemlock branch is featured in the main badge as a reference to the business name. A hemlock cone can used as a secondary element.

Applications:

The logo was applied to packaging, business cards, tissue paper and mugs. We also created a stamp of the hemlock cone to be applied to packaging with the same handmade quality of the products. Printable labels were also created that feature the branch in the background, allowing the owner to continue handwriting the scent names on each candle.
